Jaspers Mens Lacrosse Ready for 2024 Season

RIVERDALE, N.Y. — Doug Sage and his team are ready for the start of the 2024 season. Sage and the Jaspers will be entering the season with two MAAC All-Preseason Team picks in Co-Preseason Player of the Year Kyle Gucwa and midfielder Matthew Scully.

"Our players have been working hard in the off-season, and the entire program is excited for the start of the 2024 season," Sage said.

Gucwa, a captain for Manhattan, highlights the attack. He makes his return as a graduate student with a total of 50 points under his belt from last season, having an even 25 goals and 25 assists. Gucwa had a season-best seven goals last year against LIU. The offense also includes eight newcomers, including one transfer.

In the middle, Christian Lyons will also be back at midfield after 15 appearances with a pair of starts. Lyons tallied 11 goals, including one in the MAAC Semifinals. Quinn Bowler was a constant for the Jaspers, having started all 15 games and finishing tied for third on the team in points (23), including 12 goals.

Scully returns as a short stick midfielder after appearing in all 15 games with two goals, 17 groundballs, and six caused turnovers.

On the defensive end, Hunter Newman will also be making his return this season as a junior. Last season, Newman started in all 15 games and tallied a total of 22 ground balls while also causing nine turnovers. The defense will pick up three new freshmen for the season.

Sage and his staff are pleased to welcome 12 freshmen to the team.

Season Opener
The Jaspers will open their 2024 season at No. 9 Syracuse on Feb. 9. Last season, the Orange were knocked out of the conference tournament by the 2023 NCAA semifinalist, Duke. The game is set for 4 p.m. in Syracuse, N.Y. It will be the first meeting between the two teams. Syracuse is 2-0 to start the season with a 20-7 win over Vermont in its season opener, followed by an 18-10 win against No. 18 Colgate. Both victories were at home.
