Baseball Travels to Norfolk State

RIVERDALE, N.Y. - Head Coach Dave Miller and the Manhattan baseball team are back at it this weekend as they travel to Norfolk State.

The Friday-Sunday series will be aired live on NSUSpartans.com. Fans can also follow along with live stats.

All-Time Series
The three-game series at Marty L. Miller Field will mark the first time the two teams have faced each other.

The Opponent
Keith Shumate is in his fifth season as NSU head baseball coach. Norfolk State finished last season 9-42. They are 2-2 on the season after a season-opening win over Mount St. Mary's, finishing the series 2-1. The Spartans then played VMI on Tuesday night, falling 11-9. Cam Mazell leads Norfolk State at the plate with five runs and seven hits in 17 at-bats. He's batting .412 with one home run and three RBIs.

The Preview
Manhattan went 0-3 to start the season at then-No. 18 Alabama. At the completion of the series, Daniel Perez averaged .375 at the plate with three hits, one run scored, and three RBIs. Michael Staiano led the pitching unit with five strikeouts in 3.0 innings of work.

Non-Conference Outlook
The Jaspers have 28 games slated against non-conference opponents this season. Manhattan does not play at home until March 15, when it hosts Hofstra in a three-game series.

A Look Back
Manhattan finished the 2023 season with an overall record of 22-34, including a MAAC postseason win. Last year, Manhattan won 12 road games and one neutral match-up.

Preseason Nods
Graduate student Frankie Marinelli was named to the All-MAAC Preseason Team as a utility player. He appeared and started in 54 games. He batted .311, recorded 65 hits, crossed home 53 times, registered nine doubles, one home run, 30 RBI and a team-leading 47 walks to go along with 23 stolen bases. In the MAAC Preseason Polls that were also released, the Jaspers were picked to finish fifth with one first-place vote.
