LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. - The Manhattan women's basketball team had to play its second straight game with only six healthy players, unfortunately not ending in their favor, as they fell on the road at Rider, 58-54.
"We had a rough first half but I was really impressed how we battled back in the second half. This group is showing great resilience as we recover from several injuries and illnesses," said head coach
Heather Vulin.
Jade Bagrove led the offensive charge with 13 points, six rebounds, two assists, and two blocks.
Anne Bair added 11 points, eight rebounds, and three assists.
Petra Juric was just shy of a double-double with eight points and 11 rebounds. Manhattan (15-7, 8-5 MAAC) shot 34.5 percent from the field and 31.3 from long range.
If you look at the stat sheet, the numbers are almost identical for the two teams in every category. There's no wonder the final three minutes of play had fans from both sides on the edge of their seats. Rider, who had been leading the majority of the game, started to make mistakes, allowing for a hungry Jasper squad to make a run.
After trailing 36-24 at the break, the Jaspers registered 17 points compared to Rider's 8. With 5:12 on the clock, Blagrove drained a three-pointer to give Manhattan its first lead of the game at a very pivotal moment.
Trading baskets after that, a Juric three-point play made it 54-53 with the Jaspers up by one. Manhattan struggled to get its shots to fall, eventually falling by four to the Broncs.
Rider (6-16, 3-10 MAAC) was led by Taylor Langan, who had 15 points and eight rebounds. The Broncs shot 37.5 percent from the floor and 42.9 from three-point range.
The Jaspers will continue road play with a game at St. Peter's on Thursday night, before hosting Quinnipiac on Saturday, Feb. 17 for National Girls and Women in Sports Day and Breast Cancer Awareness.
