Manhattan Loses steam in Loss to Marist

RIVERDALE, N.Y. — Despite only trailing 32-31 at halftime, Manhattan ran out of juice in the second half as Marist rolled to a 82-75 win behind 24 points from Josh Pascarelli.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Manhattan got off to an excellent start and led 12-3 by the 13:31 mark.

  • Marist responded with an 8-0 run capped by an acrobatic lay-up by Pascarelli.

  • Jason Schofield proved to be a spark off the bench for the Red Foxes as his tip in at the 8-minute mark cut into Manhattan's lead at 17-15. Less than two minutes later, the Red Foxes established a 22-17 lead following a jumper from Pascarelli.

  •  Down 28-24, Manhattan fought back with a 6-0 run that regained the lead following Sydnor's third three of the afternoon.

  • Pascarelli answered with five straight for Marist, and the Jaspers went into halftime down 33-32.

  • After Marist went up by seven following a lay-in for Schofield at the 15:39 mark of the second half, Robinson drained a three and Winston got a fast break lay-up to bring it back down to two at 48-46.

  • However, Manhattan struggled to get stops when they needed to, especially on the 6-foot-9 Schofield, who produced four straight baskets midway through the second half to keep Marist on top, 56-50.

  • A steal by Devin Dinkins led to a fast break dunk by Sydnor that cut the deficit to five with 10:17 left.

  • Marist maintained their lead in double digits for the better part of the last 10 minutes, even though Sydnor's final three-pointer with 21 seconds left cut the deficit to five which was Manhattan's last breath.

STATS AND NOTES

  • Sydnor's 17 points increased his scoring average to 15 points-per-game through nine games. He ranks sixth in the MAAC in scoring.

  • Manhattan and Marist both scored 40 points in the paint, making for an aggressive inside battle.

  • Manhattan shot 35 percent (7-20) from three-point range led by Sydnor's four threes.

QUOTES FROM MANHATTAN

Manhattan head coach John Gallagher on how the offense could still improve: "We have to shoot it better. We were lucky to win one (this weekend). 2 of 21 from three from the guards (across both games)... We have to get back to the drawing board to look at some things."

Gallagher on where his team stands nine games in: "The growth of the team I'm really positive about. I'm not happy right now but in a thirty-thousand outlook there's a lot to work with in the next 30 to 60 days to get this team ready for March."

NEXT TIME OUT

The Jaspers will return to the non-conference portion of its schedule when it pays a visit to Wagner (5-4, 0-0 NEC) on Wednesday, Dec. 18. The action will be streamed live on NEC Front Row from the Spiro Sports Center.
