Davis’s Second Half Surge Not Enough as Women’s Basketball Falls to Marist

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY– The Manhattan Jaspers women's basketball team (6-5, 0-2 MAAC) fell to the Marist Red Foxes (7-5, 2-0 MAAC) by a score of 58-51 on Saturday evening inside the McCann Center.

Coming off a tough MAAC opener Thursday morning in Riverdale against Saint Peter's, Manhattan responded with force, featuring a bevy of student-athletes contributing.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Jaspers' sluggish play continued into the first stanza of their second conference contest when the Red Foxes put together a 9-2 run to open the game.
  • Queens College transfer Brianna Davis kickstarted the comeback for Manhattan with a commanding bucket down low.
  • In the waning seconds of the first stanza, Tegan Young converted a pair of free throws to narrow Marist's lead to a single possession.
  • Back-to-back buckets by Leyla Ozturk and Hana Muhl brought Marist's lead back within one basket midway through the second quarter before the Red Foxes re-extended its lead to nine.
  • The defense was on full display in the second half, starting with a steal by Ozturk on a lost ball turnover by Marist's Morgan Lee to bring the lead back within one possession.
  • After the third-quarter media timeout, it was Young who made her presence known with one made free-throw to make it a one-point game at 32-31 before Marist's Cunningham sank a screaming three-pointer with 29 seconds remaining in the third quarter.
  • Davis quieted the raucous McCann Arena crowd with a booming trey roughly three minutes into the fourth quarter to make it a four-point game. Davis then followed up with a layup off a Nitzan Amar steal.
  • The Jaspers went in front of the Red Foxes for the first time in the final five minutes with a pair of Hana Muhl free-throws.
  • Tegan Young sank home a triple to make it 52-51, but it was simply not enough to overcome Marist in the final seconds.

STATS AND NOTES

  • In the second half, junior guard Brianna Davis scored 11 points on four-of-six shooting and grabbed a rebound.
  • Hana Muhl recorded 10 rebounds in 34 minutes of work. For the second time this season, Muhl has logged double-digit boards. The first came at UMBC on November 24.
  • Three Jaspers recorded double-digit points in the game—Leyla Ozturk with 13, Tegan Young with 14, and Brianna Davis totaling 13.
  • Ozturk led the way with a trio of blocks from the team's four total.
  • Manhattan won the paint battle 26-16 (+10). Additionally, they contributed 30 points off the bench compared to Marist's 18. Second chance points for the Jaspers were in favor 12-7 (+5).
