Manhattan suffers 3-1 defeat at Marist

Poughkeepsie, NY — Manhattan came out on the losing end, 25-23, in 3 different sets on Sunday en route to a 3-1 loss to Marist. The Jaspers received strong performances from freshmen Fiona VanDyke (17 kills) and Lizzy Kovach (15 digs) but couldn't figure out the Red Foxes in the second and final game of the weekend road-trip.

The Jaspers put themselves behind the 8 ball early, going down 6-1 in the first set. However, Manhattan would inch their way back and draw to within one at 19-18 thanks to a 4-0 Jaspers run. Manhattan and Marist exchanged the next 4 points before the Red Foxes gave themselves some breathing room at 23-20 following back to back points. Marist closed the set with 25–23 edge.

Manhattan launched themselves back on track in the second set by getting off to a quick start. The Jaspers jumped out to a 6-3 start, as VanDyke and Mikalah Curren were the aggressors. The second set featured runs by both teams and 10 lead changes, but it was Manhattan who braved through and came out alive with the 25-23 win.

Manhattan was plagued by 10 errors in the third set and ultimately dropped the set, 25-18. Manhattan's only lead in the fourth and final set came at 1-0 before Marist dictated the terms the rest of the way and pulled out a marginal 25-23 win to end the game.

VanDyke's 17 kills were a career high and came a day after she set an initial career high with 16. Kovach ended her weekend with 36 digs between both games at Siena and Marist. The freshmen duo appeared in all 4 sets on Sunday in Poughkeepsie. Junior setter Sarah Emmons had 42 assists which increased her career number to 6 games with 40 or more assists.
