RIVERDALE, N.Y.. - Manhattan College men's soccer battled George Washington to a 2-2 draw in its 2023 home opener, a game featuring four yellow cards.
Coach Scott sees his team continuing to trend positively, saying "As we continue to grow and learn this season, it's critical we show the personality required to be successful against all scenarios and today offered us that. Our determination to get a result and come from behind is another moment that will set us up for the MAAC. We have had two tough tests so far and we expect the same Friday under the lights against La Salle."
The Jaspers kicked off scoring with an early 5th minute goal from the foot of Gunnar Studenhofft. Studenhofft received a corner kick, initially had his shot blocked, but was able to recover it and place his second chance shot in the back of the right side of the net. George Washington answered in the 30th minute via a goal from Yago Torres, and stole the lead early in the second half off of a 56th minute goal from Ben Hissrich. The Jaspers were able to answer late in what was a back and forth game, salvaging the draw in the 87th minute via a goal from Tony Yeboah, coming off a deep pass from Ensa Sanneh.Â
The Jaspers were led in the net by goalkeeper Danny DiMarco. He collected four saves in his 2023 home debut. Manhattan College was led in shots by Studenhofft and Yeboah who both attempted four.
As a team, the Jaspers recorded seven corner kicks and had five shots on goal.
Manhattan returns to the pitch on Friday, September 1st as it hosts La Salle at 6 p.m. at Gaelic Park. This will be the Jaspers last non-conference home game.
