POMONA, N.Y. – The 2023 season for the Manhattan baseball team ended Thursday night in an elimination game in the MAAC Baseball Championship, falling to Canisius 8-7.
In head coach
Dave Miller's first season, the final mark for the team was 22-34 overall and 13-11 in MAAC play.
Canisius was first to tack on a run this evening. Ty Weavers brought home Kenny Dodson, on a single to right to take a 1-0 lead.
In the next half inning, Manhattan's bats responded.
Trevor Hansen cranked a double to bring home
Trevor Santos and tie the score 1-1.
Canisius regained the lead off a Carlin Dick sacrifice fly in the fourth inning. Dick delivered for the Golden Griffins again in the sixth inning, delivering a two-RBI single down the right-field line to grow the lead to 4-1. The Golden Griffins tacked on another run to exit the inning with a 5-1 lead.
The seventh inning had the potential to be the inning the Jaspers needed. Hansen kicked the inning off with a single. That was followed up by a
Logan Pfannenbecker walk to put runners on first and second for
Pete Durocher. Durocher got a ground ball just by the shortstop to drive in Hansen and make the score 5-2. The two runners moved into scoring position when a balk was called on the Golden Griffins during the next at-bat. During that at-bat, a pitch grazed
Jack Lynch to load the bases with one out.
Alfredo Delgado struck out swinging for out number two, and the third out came by way of a groundout by
Daniel Perez to escape the jam with just one run.
One more run came across in the eighth. Santos doubled with one out and was awarded third on the second balk in the game. Hansen brought him home on an RBI groundout to make the score 5-3—the bottom of the eighth featured three Canisius runs.
Manhattan refused to go quietly into the night. Canisius brought in a new arm to attempt to close the game, but he struggled to find the zone, issuing back-to-back four-pitch walks to Durocher and Lynch. Delgado stepped in and swatted a double to score Lynch and move Durocher to third, making the score 8-4. After another pitching change,
Daniel Perez tacked on another run with a sac-fly to score Durocher and come within three runs.
After Canisius got it's second out, Santos singled up the middle to score Delgado and bring Manhattan within two runs. Hansen stepped back in and was hit by the first pitch of the at-bat and was awarded first.
Another Canisius arm entered the game and walked
Frankie Marinelli, which loaded the bases. Pfannenbecker drew a walk right after to get the game within one. Durocher stepped back in for the second time in the inning but was coaxed into a flyout, ending the rally.
