RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Canisius swept Manhattan softball on Sunday at Gaelic Park. The Golden Griffins took a pair of close games from the Jaspers.
Game 1: Canisius 3, Manhattan 0
Manhattan and Canisius were locked in a pitcher's duel in game one. Megan Giese and
Sophia Kiseloski did not give up a run over the first four innings.
The biggest threat over the first four innings was when Kiseloski worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the fourth. The freshman induced a force-out to get out of the inning.
Canisius got on the board in the fifth. Farris singled and stole second base to start the frame. A bunt moved Gabi Farris over to third. Farris then scored on a bunt single from Christie McGee-Ross.
Manhattan tried to tie the game in the bottom of the fifth.
Anissa Villalobos singled to center with two away.
Lindsey Hoag tried to score from second on the hit but was cut down at home to end the inning.
In the top of the seventh, the Golden Griffins tacked on two more runs. Nicole Riviat hit a two-run homer to center field to make it 3-0.
Kiseloski went the distance for the Jaspers while allowing three runs. Giese struck out 10 in a complete game for the Golden Griffins.
Game 2: Canisius 5, Manhattan 3
Canisius started the scoring in the first with two runs and then added runs in the third, fifth, and sixth.
Manhattan cut into the deficit with three in the bottom of the sixth.
Lauren Rende tripled to start the inning before scoring on a wild pitch for the inning's first run. After a double play, three straight hits brought in the inning's final two runs.
Lindsey Hoag drove in the two runs with a double to left center.
Toria Kover picked up the win for Canisius after tossing five innings. Megan Giese picked up the save in game two.
Makayla Veneziale was tagged with the loss.
Manhattan returns to action on Wednesday for a single game at St. John's. The first pitch between the Jaspers and Red Storm is set for 3 p.m. in Queens.
