POMANA, N.Y. – Four days ago,
Frankie Marinelli walked the Jaspers off. Today, it was
Ryan Eaton, who delivered a single to right field in the bottom of the tenth inning to score
Ryan Ash from third to lift the Manhattan baseball team past Marist, 6-5, Saturday afternoon at Clover Stadium.
The series is now deadlocked at 1-1, with the rubber game set for tomorrow at 1 pm.
Marist posted the first three runs, plating one in the top of the first and another pair in the second.
The first run came across the plate for the Green and White in an unorthodox fashion. In the fifth inning with runners on the corners, Marist's pitcher committed a balk to move the runners 90 feet each, which scored
Trevor Santos, making the score 3-1.
Later on in the same inning,
Pete Durocher hit a hard grounder down the third base line and beat the throw across the diamond while Marinelli scored, making the score 3-2.
The lead shifted over to the good guys in the seventh inning, Marinelli set the table with a single which was followed up by a
Logan Pfannenbecker walk, one of three on the day for Pfannenbecker. Later on,
Alfredo Delgado connected for a single to bring around Marinelli to tie the game at 3-3.
Trevor Hansen followed up Delgado with another RBI single, scoring Pfannenbecker to take a 4-3 lead.
The lead didn't stay in the Jaspers' favor for long, plating two runs in the top of the eighth off a single and a throwing error by the Jaspers taking a 5-4 lead.
Faced with a one-run deficit, Pfannenbecker hit for what normally would be a single, but the Red Foxes' shortstop committed a throwing error, allowing Pfannenbecker to move to second. Pfannenbecker would then be pinch ran for
Connor O'Neill. After Marist secured a pair of outs, Hansen stepped into the box and delivered another clutch hit, doubling down the left field line, scoring O'Neill and tying the game at 5-5.
On the bump at the start of the tenth for the Jaspers was
Trey Packen, who did his job and retired the Red Foxes in order to give the Jasper bats a chance.
Another Red Foxes error allowed Ash to reach first in the bottom of the tenth. A Marinelli single moved Ash to third and Eaton delivered for the win.
Jack Mahoney turned in a strong relief appearance on the bump this afternoon, pitching six innings and yielding five hits and a pair of runs.
