Jaspers Swept by Mountaineers Monday

EMMITSBURG, Md. – In a doubleheader pushed to Monday from Saturday due to weather, Manhattan was swept by Mount St. Mary's in MAAC play.
 
Game 1: Mount St. Mary's 3, Manhattan 1
Mount St. Mary's used a pair of homers to take game one of the doubleheader, 3-1.
 
The Mountaineers got a two-run home run from Hannah Gartell in the bottom of the second. Two innings later, Tori Bowles hit a solo shot to left field to make it 3-0 Mountaineers.
 
Gabriella Mazzotta scored the lone run for the Jaspers in the fifth. Mazzotta reached on an error to start the top of the inning before coming around to score on another error by Mount St. Mary's defense.
 
The Jaspers had runners on base in the sixth and seventh innings but could not get either home.
 
Maddy Weir went 3-3 for the Jaspers. Lauren Rende went 2-4.
 
Sophia Kiseloski started in the circle for Manhattan. The freshman struck out six over six innings. It was the fourth time this season that Kiseloski struck out at least six in an outing.
 
Game 2: Mount St. Mary's 8, Manhattan 7
The Mountaineers' offense was ready to go in game two. The home side led 5-0 after two innings, which saw them score four times in the bottom of the second.
 
Maggie Kane and Vanessa Martin had two RBI hits in the second inning.
 
Manhattan got on the board at the top of the third. Lily Fish hit her first collegiate home run to right center to make it 5-2 Mountaineers.
 
After the Mountaineers responded with three runs in the bottom of the third, the Jaspers trailed 8-2 heading into the later innings. In the sixth, the Jaspers got the first two runs off errors. That brought Lauren Rende to the plate with two on and two away. The senior hit her fifth home run of the season to get the Jaspers to within one, 8-7.
 
In the seventh, Manhattan had runners on base who could tie or take the lead. The Jaspers had runners at first and second with two away but stranded them there.
 
Fish finished the game 2-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Lindsey Hoag and Marika Deemer had two hits for the Jaspers.
 
The Jaspers are off until Saturday morning, when they host Niagara for a doubleheader starting at 10 a.m.
