EMMITSBURG, Md. – Manhattan's defense held Mount St. Mary's to one goal in the second half and went on an 8-0 scoring run in a 9-3 win to open MAAC play.
Manhattan (4-2) led 3-2 after one after scoring twice inside the final minute of the opening quarter. Those two goals started a run of eight straight goals for the Jaspers.
Dan MacKinney scored three times during the run to record his first hat trick as a Jasper.
Liam Walshe added his second of the game and 14th of the season during the stretch.
Quinn Bowler,
Scott O'Connor,
Christian Lyons, and
Kevin Jaffe scored for the Jaspers.
After taking a 2-1 lead, the Mountaineers went scoreless for close to 40 minutes of game time. William Vandergrift gave the home side a 2-1 lead with 6:55 left in the first quarter. Kyle Cullen ended the drought at 12:45 of the fourth quarter.
Over that span,
Joseph Persico made six stops, and the Jaspers' defense forced eight turnovers. Persico finished the afternoon with 12 stops and a .800 save percentage. The performance lowered Persico's GAA for the season to 8.34.
Mount St. Mary's did hold a 36-22 advantage in shots but only got 15 on goal. Manhattan scored on nine of its 14 shots on goal.
Walshe added an assist to finish with three points like MacKinney. Bowler also added an assist to his goal, and Kyla Gucwa finished with a pair of assists.
MAAC play continues for the Jaspers on Saturday when Sacred Heart visits Gaelic Park at 12 p.m.
