Manhattan Drops Pair to Open Red Raider Classic

LUBBOCK, Texas – Manhattan dropped both games on the first day of the Red Raider Classic.
 
The Jaspers were edged in extras in game one against New Mexico and were run-ruled by Texas Tech in game two.
 
Game 1: New Mexico 7, Manhattan 6 (9 Innings)
Manhattan led 3-1 after the first inning against New Mexico. Gabriella Mazzotta led off the inning with a triple and scored on a Kaitlin Flood double. Maddy Weir made it 3-1 with a two-run homer with two away in the frame. It was Weir's first homer of her career.
 
New Mexico retook the lead in the top of the second with three runs of their own.
 
In the bottom of the third, Manhattan's offense struck again. The Jaspers scored three times through two singles and a groundout. The first RBI single came from Madison Ihnat through the right side. Gabi Mills followed with one to right to score Weir. Ihnat scored on a double-play to conclude the scoring.
 
Manhattan led 6-4 as New Mexico came to bat in the top of the sixth. The Lobos had the first four batters reach off Sophia Kiseloski. The fourth of those hitters, Rachael Hathoot, singled to right on an 0-2 pitch to make it 6-5. In the seventh, Manhattan was two outs away from the win when Maddie Boldt homered to left center to tie the game and force extra innings.
 
With two outs in the top of the ninth, Peyton Robinson doubled to left-center to bring home Chloe Yeatts for the go-ahead run.
 
Manhattan was retired in order in the eighth and ninth innings.
 
Kiseloski took the loss after going seven innings of relief.   
 
Game 2: Texas Tech 10, Manhattan 0 (5 Innings)
Texas Tech beat Buffalo 13-0 in its first game on Friday, which continued against Manhattan.
 
The Red Raiders struck for five in the first inning on six hits while leaving the bases loaded.
 
After scoring once in the second, Texas Tech added on three more in the third. Demi Elder brought two of them in with a double to make it 8-0. The Red Raiders' final run of the night came from Chassety Raines on a triple to center.
 
Gabriella Mazzotta had the lone hit for the Jaspers in the game. The outfielder singled up the middle in the top of the third.
 
Makayla Veneziale took the loss for the Jaspers after allowing the five runs in the first.  
 
The Jaspers will play two more games on Saturday. Manhattan will play Buffalo at 1:30 p.m. and Texas Tech at 4 p.m. eastern.
