Box Score RIVERDALE, N.Y. - The Manhattan men's basketball team opened up Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play with a dramatic 75-74 overtime victory over Mount St. Mary's at Draddy Gymnasium.
"I thought our players came through. I credit the players for executing down the stretch," said Coach Gallagher. Three freshmen out there and they did a great job. We have to commit every day to a growth mindset on how we can get better. It was a huge win."
The Jaspers (4-3, 1-0 MAAC) balanced scoring attack tonight featured five double-digit scorers, led by
Daniel Rouzan, who recorded 18 points.
Jaden Winston facilitated the attack tonight recording 10 assists for Manhattan.
Dakota Leffew led Mount St. Mary's with 21 points and 3 rebounds. Jedy Cordilia recorded a double-double, finishing with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
The Jaspers started strong in the first half, shooting 53.8 percent from the 3-point line, resulting in a 43-29 halftime lead.
Xinyi Li and
Perry Cowan led Manhattan in scoring at the break with 10 points.
Coming out of the break, the Mount came out strong, continuing to trim down the lead until eventually taking a 66-64 lead with 1:29 to play. Manhattan answered with Rouzan and-one, followed by two Cowan free throws to take a 69-66 lead. The Mount recorded a free throw, followed by a layup to knot things up at 69-69 with 34 seconds remaining. Neither team could score in the last 34 seconds sending the game into overtime.
In overtime, each team was able to knock down a free throw, making the score 70-70, but the first field goal was not recorded until
Rokas Jocys made a layup with 2:48 remaining to give the Jaspers a 72-70 lead. The teams traded misses until the Mount finally responded with 1:20 remaining when Dola Adebayo knocked down a deep two to tie it at 72. Following a Jaspers miss the Mount hit another jump shot taking a 74-72 lead with 31 seconds remaining. Coming out of a time out, the Jaspers got the ball to
Rokas Jocys who was able to knock down what would end up being a game-winning three-pointer for the Jaspers.
Manhattan will hit the road to play Marist College at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 3.
