Jaspers Dominate Skyhawks at Home

RIVERDALE, N.Y.- Manhattan tops Stonehill at home, beating them 3-1. The final set scores were 22-25, 25-17, 27-25, and 25-17.

The Skyhawks won the first set and were then swept by the Jaspers for the final three sets of the match.

"After the first set, I made some substitutions, which gave us the correct team composition we needed to win. Julianne hasn't played in the past two to three weeks, so it was nice having her back, and it was nice to see her help her team get the win," said head coach Mauro Miletic when asked about how he was able to adjust after dropping the first set.

Following the first set, the Jaspers were able to get an early lead on the Skyhawks, advancing three points over the Skyhawks with a five-point run. Each Skyhawk encroachment on the Jaspers' lead was met with a strong Jaspers run. The Skyhawks made a final push in the set, scoring four straight points to come within four of the Jaspers. However, the Jaspers' offense was not ready to give up the lead, winning the game on a four-point run to 25.

The third set was neck and neck up until the end when the Skyhawks went on a seven-point run to take the lead, 23-22. The Jaspers were able to secure the victory in the set after scoring two straight kills, one a kill by Laila Glover assisted by Julianne McKee, and the second a service ace from Anna Duncan.

In the fourth and final set, it was anything but back and forth. Both teams went on four- and five-point runs, falling behind and gaining on each other. However, the Jaspers came out on top with this, scoring the first three points of the set and forcing the Skyhawks to play catch up. Over the set, the Jaspers slowly built up their lead until they eventually beat the Skyhawks 25-17.

Leading the Jaspers' offense was Mikalah Curran, who scored 16 kills. Following Curran was Camila Gomez with 13 kills. McKee led the team tonight in assists, setting up 33 for her teammates. Leading the defense was Dominique Velarde and Elenoa Sing. Velarde picked up 10 digs, while Sing put up five blocks.

Manhattan plays again on Saturday, October 7th, at 1:00 p.m. against Marist University in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
