RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Manhattan won its first home game of the week today against Siena, defeating the Saints 3-2. The final set scores were 25-17, 23-25, 25-23, 21-25, and 15-12.
The Jaspers battled it out today with the Saints, coming out on top in a five-set match.
In the first set, the Jaspers dominated for the majority of the set, maintaining the lead over the Saints. The Jaspers gained their largest lead in the middle of the set after a 6-1 run, putting them up by eight.
The second set saw a strong offensive push by the Saints. After being down by 10 (15-5), the Saints fired off a massive 14-2 point run to win the set.
By the third set, both teams were clearly fatigued, with each team trading one to two points at a time after short volleys. However, the Jaspers came out on top in this set, defeating the Saints 25-23.
After dropping the fourth set, the Jaspers, knowing they needed the fifth set for the victory, gave it everything they had left. After making some crucial substitutions, the Jaspers overcame a three-point deficit and reclaimed the lead from the Saints. This run was initiated by a kill from
Mikalah Curran. This kill gave the Jaspers the momentum to execute a seven-point run, eventually leading them to a 15-point victory.
Leading the Jaspers in kills tonight was Bertens with a 28-kill game.
Sarah Emmons led the team in assists this afternoon, providing 35 for her teammates.
