PRINCESS ANNE, MD - Manhattan fought hard in both its matches today against Hampton and University of Maryland Eastern Shore, but ultimately, was defeated by Hampton 3-0 (25-12, 25-11, 25-11) and by UMES 3-0 (25-12, 25-11, 25-19).
The first match of the day, against Hampton, started off strong for the Jaspers with a 5-0 lead to start the game in the first set. this 5-0 run can be attributed to
Julia Menocal, the outside hitter/middle blocker with 3 kills and a block. However, Hampton answered back with a 5-point run of their own to tie the set at 6-6.
The second and third set proved harder for Manhattan to keep up with Hampton maintaining a double digit lead for most of the set.
Menocal finished the match with a total of 11 kills, outperforming Hampton's Clara Smith, who lead the Pirates with 10 kills.
Sarah Emmons assists is also something that should not go unnoticed with a total of 13 assists.
In the second afternoon session against UMES, Manhattan dug deep in the third set to get back in the match, with one team's lead never exceeding 6 points, but could never get past UMES.
Once again, Mencal lead the game in kills with a total of nine outscoring UMES's leader, Derionah Abner by two.
Bella Nascimento, has a solid defense performance, recording seven digs for the Jaspers.
Manhattan continues their long stretch on the road again at Central Connecticut State on Wednesday at 7pm.
