Box Score RIVERDALE, NY – Manhattan beat Saint Peter's Saturday afternoon at Draddy Gymnasium. The Jaspers won by scores of 28-26, 30-28, 28-30, 23-25, 15-10.
This afternoon's win serves as head coach
Mauro Miletic's first win as a head coach. Today also was the first match played on the brand new volleyball court in Draddy Gym.
The first three sets went past the 25 points to make the sets close back and forth affairs to claim the set. In the first set, Manhattan was able to take the early lead and go on a 5 point run off a kill by Julianne McKee. Manhattan was able to maintain an impressive lead that at its greatest was seven points. However, after taking advantage of an attacking error, Saint Peter's went on a 6 point run to tie the game at 19-19. Despite Saint Peter's efforts, the Jaspers would not allow the Peacocks to take the lead once that set.
In the second set, Manhattan was able to again take advantage of an early lead with the Jaspers obtaining a 4 point lead to make the score 5-1. Manhattan maintained a lead for almost the whole set, with only allowing Saint Peter's to take the lead twice, but kept it to a one point lead. Towards the end of the set it became an extremely close game with the score being tied a total of 12 times. Manhattan won the set with a service ace from
Julia Menocal to make the final score 30-28.
Sets three and four proved difficult for Manhattan to keep up with Saint Peter's offensive attack. While Manhattan lead for most of sets three and four, Saint Peter's was able to take advantage of scoring runs to get them back in the game.
In the fifth and final set, Manhattan was able to win the race to 15 and win 15-10. Early in the set, the Jaspers were able to go on a six point scoring run, kicked off by a kill from Menocal. Manhattan maintained a healthy lead until Saint Peter's was able to answer back and bring the lead down to 3 points. However, Manhattan was able to secure the win with another kill by
Menocal.
The offensive leaders of the game were
Menocal, with a season high of 37 points, 33 kills and 4 aces.
Kelly Markowski also had a season-high 14 kills.
Sarah Emmons dished a total of 27 assists, with
Mckee at 25. On defense,
Teresa Garza scored 21 digs.
Manhattan returns to
Draddy Gymnasium again tomorrow, Sunday September 25th at 1 p.m. to face Rider.
