Jaspers Drop Heartbreaker to LIU

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. - The Manhattan men's soccer team dropped a heartbreaker to LIU, 2-1, Wednesday afternoon in the team's penultimate non-conference match. The Jasper's drop to 1-3-2 while LIU improves to 4-2.

The Sharks had a great opportunity early in the match, following a yellow card, LIU lined up for a free kick just outside of the box. Matthias Heiland tried to beat Daniel Polakowski on the lower right side, but Polakowski corralled the chance to deny the Sharks.

The Green and White struck first on the afternoon. Ronaldo Da Silva took the ball up the right side of the field and sent it out to Johan Velez, who took the ball and buried a right-footed shot in the bottom left of the net for his first goal of the 2022 campaign to take a 1-0 lead.

The Sharks got the equalizer in the 63rd minute, Henry Haferkorn put away a rebound.

LIU netted the game-winner off a penalty kick from Emil Jaaskelainen with a minute and a half left in the match.

Manhattan did threaten many times in the second half. Most notably, Gunnar Studdenhoft sent a ball just over the net in the final minutes. The Green and White outshot the Sharks, 11-9.

The Jaspers return to Gaelic Park for the final non-conference match of the season, welcoming Fairleigh Dickinson to Riverdale next Wednesday, Sept. 21, at 6 p.m.
