Jaspers Win 2022 MAAC Title

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.- For the first time in 20 years, Manhattan is the MAAC Men's Lacrosse Champion. On the same field, they won in 2002; the Jaspers defeated St.Bonaventure 8-7.

Only one goal was scored in a competitive first quarter for either side. St. Bonaventure's Aiden Macdonnell scored the lone goal of the quarter with 12:47 on the clock.

The Jaspers came out storming in the second quarter, scoring four goals to secure a two-goal lead. Kyle Gucwa, Justin Malpica, and Quinn Bowler scored for the Jaspers. Then with under two minutes remaining, Sean MacKinney found the back of the net to make it a 4-2 game at the half.

St. Bonaventure struck first to start the third quarter, scoring in under the first minute of play. Jack Shanley scored at the 5:43 mark to put the Jaspers ahead 5-3. While the Bonnies would score another in the quarter, Jake Nicolosi answered to secure a 6-4 lead to enter the final quarter.

The Bonnies cut the lead to one in the first five minutes of the fourth quarter. Malpica struck twice to complete his hat trick and provide the necessary insurance for the Jaspers. Malpica's third and final goal came with 5:28 to play. The Bonnies scored twice in the final three minutes to make it an 8-7 game with 40 seconds left. The Bonnies got two more shots in the last 20 seconds, but neither were on goal.

Malpica scored four goals in the championship and was named the most valuable player. Sean Mackinney and Shanley each secured a goal for the Green and White. Brendan Krebs made five saves in goal for the Jaspers.

Liam Walshe, Luke Pacher, and Tadhg O' Riordan were selected to the 2022 MAAC All-Championship Team, joining Malpica.

The Jaspers will find out who they will play in the NCAA Tournament on Sunday, May 8, at 9 p.m. eastern on ESPNU. The NCAA Tournament begins on May 11 with the opening round games.
