Manhattan Drops MAAC Title Game to Fairfield

ATLANTIC CITY, NJ- The Manhattan women's basketball team fell to the number one seeded Fairfield Stags 73-68 in the 2022 MAAC Championship Game. In defeat, Courtney Warley and Dee Dee Davis were named to the all-tournament team. 

The Jaspers went to work quickly in the opening quarter. Davis hit a long-three in the third minute of the play, and Brazil Harvey-Carr hit one of her own on the next possession. Manhattan (21-11) ended the quarter with a 17-8 lead. 

Fairfield (25-6) responded in the second ten and closed the lead to 31-26 at the half. Davis hit another two three-pointers and added eight points for the Jaspers during the quarter. Manhattan shot 46-percent from inside the arc compared to the Stags 37-percent. The Green and White grabbed 19 rebounds, four steals, and one block in the first 20 minutes of play. 

In the second half, Fairfield tied it up at 33 with just under eight to play in the third. The lead would go on to change six more times throughout the game. With 2:31 left to play in the quarter freshman, Petra Juric grabbed a huge offensive rebound and finished the layup to put Manhattan ahead 45-43. The Jaspers and Stags entered the fourth tied at 47. 

The Stags opened the fourth quarter with an 8-0 run to take a 55-47 lead. However, Davis was not giving up without a fight, hitting four three-pointers and scoring 17 points in the last five minutes of play to cut the score to 71-68 with just under ten seconds to play. Fairfield would hit free throws to pull away with the 73-68 victory. 

Davis had a game- and career-high 35 points and two assists. Courtney Warley finished with 12 points and 13 rebounds. Juric finished with eight points and four rebounds.

Defensively, the Jaspers grabbed 37 rebounds, forced eight Fairfield turnovers, and converted those into nine points. The Jaspers used their height to their advantage, outscoring the Stags 20-14 in the paint.
