DELAND, Fla. – Manhattan concluded its opening weekend trip to Florida with a 6-4 loss to Stetson on Sunday.
Stetson (2-1) scored four in the bottom of the seventh to take a 6-3 lead after Manhattan (1-2) scored in the fifth and sixth innings. The Jaspers added one run in the ninth.
Manhattan scored twice in the fifth with the benefit of only one hit.
Trevor Santos and
Frankie Marinelli reached via an error and a walk.
David Bermudez loaded the bases with a single through the left side.
Matt Padre plated one run with a sacrifice fly, and Marinelli scored via a wild pitch.
Michael Campbell double to lead off the sixth and came around to score the go-ahead run on a groundout. The Jaspers loaded the bases twice in the inning but could only get one run.
Matt Padre and
Harrison Treble were retired in order with the bases full to end the threat.
Stetson had its first three hitters reach after the Jaspers stranded one in the top of the seventh. The first run came when Anthony DeFabbia scored on a fielder's choice. The two insurance runs came via a sacrifice fly and a single to left.
Manhattan had an opportunity to tie the game in the ninth. Treble singled to left and then advanced to third on a failed pick-off attempt and a balk with one away. Treble tried to steal home when
Jack Lynch walked but was cut down for the second out. Santos then singled up the middle to score Lynch from second. Campbell and Santos were stranded at first and third when the final out was recorded.
Treble finished 3-for-4 for the Jaspers. Bermudez and Santos had multiple hits as well.
Jordan Warecke started for Manhattan and lasted five innings while allowing two runs and striking out five.
Up next for the Jaspers is another trip south. Manhattan visits South Carolina Upstate on Friday before playing two games at Presbyterian over the weekend.
