West Long Branch, NJ — Manhattan came out on top 2-1 in an overtime thriller at Monmouth. Karl Gelbjerg was the hero for the Jaspers in the 104th minute when he headed in the game-winning goal after his initial shot hit off the post.
*Manhattan jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 22nd minute thanks to a goal from Johan Velez off an assist from Harry Bark. Velez now has four goals in his junior season which only trails Oswald Annang's six goals among Manhattan players.
*The Jaspers outshot the Hawks 7-1 in the first half and held a 1-0 lead at the break.
*Monmouth came out of halftime with more energy and aggression. In the 47th minute, the Jaspers refused to concede the equalizer when a Manhattan player cleared the ball off the goal line just before it crossed the line. The Hawks were inches away from tying the score again when Jonas Lyshoj's shot hit the woodwork and went out of play in the 56th minute. A few minutes later, Monmouth thought they tied the game but the goal was waved off after a Monmouth player made illegal contact with Manhattan goalie Danny DiMarco.
*The Jaspers were keen on extending their lead but fell short of doing so a few times. In the 62nd minute, Bark had a header attempt off a Manhattan corner but it lacked pace and precision to fool Monmouth goalie Sean Murray. In the 76th minute, James Cotter had an opportunity in the box but his strike was blocked away for a Jaspers' corner kick.
*In the 82nd minute, Monmouth tied the score as Ben Zakowski perfectly placed his free kick into the upper right corner of the net.
*The overtime action was a slog until Gelbjerg's walk-off goal. Monmouth only had one shot in the overtime before Manhattan escaped with their first road win of the season.
*Manhattan continues their road trip at Quinnipiac on Saturday, Oct. 30 with kick-off slated for 2 p.m. in Hamden. With the win, Manhattan moved into a tie with Iona for the eight seed.
