West Long Branch, NJ - Manhattan forced a season-high 31 turnovers, while junior
Sydney Watkins (Wanaque, NJ / Saddle River Day)Â scored a season-high 17 points as Manhattan opened its two-game series at Monmouth with a decisive 58-45 victory at OceanFirst Bank Center.
With the victory, the Jaspers improve to 6-6 and 6-3 in the MAAC, while the Hawks fall to 0-5 and 0-1 in the league.
The game was a nip-and-tuck affair through the entire first half, and much of the third period, before the Green & White asserted itself in a big way.
Trailing by two, junior
Dee Dee Davis (Bronx, NY / Truman) converted an old-fashioned three-point to reclaim the lead for Manhattan 38-37 with 3:35 to play in the third. Watkins followed with her fifth three pointer of the game, before senior
Courtney Warley (West Chester, PA / Bishop Shanahan) split a pair from the line to give the visitors a five-point advantage with 1:49 to play in the stanza.
Monmouth quickly hit a pair from the line and appeared poised to further dent the lead at the end of the period, before Davis split a pair from the line, picked off an errant pass and took it coast to coast to give the Jaspers a 45-39 lead at the end of the period.
Graduate student
Gabby Cajou (Stony Point, NY / North Rockland) followed Davis' lead and picked off another errant pass, before converting at the other end.
The Hawks would briefly stop the bleeding with a free throw, before graduate student
Pamela Miceus (Haverstraw, NY / North Rockland) and Warley hit back-to-back shots to give the Jaspers an insurmountable 51-40 advantage with 6:35 to play.
Monmouth would trim the lead to single-digits just once more, as Manhattan snapped a three-game losing streak.
Warley registered 14 points, seven rebounds and four steals, while Davis added 11 points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals to round out the double-figure scorers for the Jaspers.
