Jaspers Take Down Canisius

Riverdale, NY - Manhattan freshman Emily LaPointe (Staten Island, NY / Staten Island Academy) set a career scoring-high of 25 points against Canisius Thursday night, helping the Jaspers to a decisive 68-50 win over the Golden Griffins, the team's first MAAC win of the 2019-20 season.

Manhattan improves to 4-7 on the year and 1-1 in MAAC play, while Canisius falls to 1-9 and 0-1 in the league.

Highlights:
  • LaPointe surpassed her previous scoring high of 18, which was set against Villanova on November 21. She added six rebounds and four steals while drawing six fouls against the Canisius defense.
  • LaPointe was one of three Jaspers to score in double-figures Thursday. Sydney Watkins (Wanaque, NJ / Saddle River Day) contributed 16 of her own, hitting four threes in the game, while Courtney Warley (West Chester, PA / Bishop Shanahan) added 14 points and a game-high 12 rebounds, her second double-double performance of the season.
  • Shooting just 19 percent in the first quarter, the Jaspers found themselves down by 10 in the beginning of the second before going on a defense-fueled 15-0 run midway through the period to take over the lead. At the half, Manhattan and Canisius were locked-in at 33 apiece.
  • A huge third quarter sealed the win for Manhattan, who shot 55.6 percent from the floor in that period, including going 4-7 from beyond the arc. The Jaspers held the Griffs to just 11 points in the quarter to go up 13.
  • It was more of the same in the final period, as the Jaspers allowed just one Canisius field goal in the final 10 minutes, growing their lead to as much as 21.
  • Manhattan forced 21 turnovers from the Griffs, scoring 27 points off the Canisius missteps. The Jaspers also out-rebounded the Griffs 43-38 and 21-13 in offensive rebounds, leading to 13 second-chance points for Manhattan.
  • Manhattan's 43 rebounds is the second-best performance on the boards for the team this year.
  • The Jaspers nabbed a season-high 14 steals from the Griffs, behind LaPointe's four. Warley and Pamela Miceus (Haverstraw, NY / North Rockland) both contributed three of their own.
  • Manhattan's four blocks against Canisius was also a season-high for the team. Miceus tied for a game-high two.
  • Canisius' 50 points is the lowest an opponent has scored against the Jaspers this year, with the Griffs making just 17 field goals (also an opponent low).
