Jaspers Fall To Lehigh

Bethlehem, PA - After a two-match sweep Friday at the Crosstown Tournament, Manhattan volleyball hit a snag against Lehigh, falling in three sets to the Mountain Hawks on Saturday, September 7. The Jaspers finished the annual tourney 2-1, moving to 2-4 on the year.

Highlights:
  • Lehigh came out victorious Saturday after going 25-14, 25-21, 25-13.
  • Freshman hitter Lizzi Brown (Orlando, FL / Bishop Moore) continued to pace the attack for the Jaspers, tying for a team-high seven kills Saturday afternoon on a .227 hitting percentage. Teammate Julia Menocal (Bronx, NY / Preston) contributed seven kills of her own.
  • Brown added five digs, two aces and an assist to her day's performance.
  • With a team-high 21 assists on the day, setter Abby Wilde (Parkesberg, PA / Octorora) added seven digs to lead the Jaspers in that category, as well.
  • Manhattan was outscored 60-30 in the match, with the Mountain Hawks hitting over .400 in each set and earning a .440 hitting percentage for the entire contest.
  • Lehigh was also hot from the service line, hitting eight aces with six or more players contributing at least one over the three-set match.
  • After the Jaspers pulled within three at 13-10 in the first set, Lehigh went on a 12-4 run to close it out.
  • The Jaspers went up 8-2 to start the second set, with Kelly Markowski (Winter Park, FL / Lake Highland Preparatory) offering two kills during the run. But the Mountain Hawks, boosted by kills from Sabrina Lancaster, drew even with Manhattan at 10-10, then took the lead for good at 20-19.
  • Erin Hoener (St. Louis, MO / Incarnate Word) had three of her five total kills in the second set, hitting .750 for the set and adding a block in the stanza.
  • Despite a combined eight kills from Menocal and Brown in the third, Lehigh took an early lead, with five players offering one or more kill. A late 5-0 run widened the deficit to 22-11 for the Jaspers, who ultimately succumbed to the Lehigh attack.
