Box Score (PDF)

Buffalo, NY -
Canisius defeated Manhattan 10-4 in the series opener between the teams at the Demske Sports Complex.

The Golden Griffins improve to 10-15 while the Jaspers fall to 7-17.

Canisius scored four runs in each of the first two frames before Manhattan got a run back in the top of the third with a two-out rally. Freshman Sam Franco (Bardonia, NY / Clarkstown South) singled, before Shawn Blake (Stratford, CT / Elon) and Nick Cimillo (AIrmont, NY / Suffern) each walked to load up the bases. Junior Dominic Palma (Hilton, NY / Hilton) was then plunked, forcing in Franco for the Jaspers' first run of the game.

The Golden Griffins would immediately get that run back in the bottom part of the frame in jumping in front 9-1.

Down but not out, Manhattan battled back with three runs in the sixth inning to trim the deficit to 9-4. Palma led off with a solo home run, before sophomore Matt Padre (Flemington, NJ / Hunterdon Central) singled and junior Alex Cerda (Miami, FL / Florida Christian) followed with a single. Sophomore Santiago Riera (Rioclaro, Venezuela / Brunswick (CT)) added a RBI single to plate Padre while forcing Canisius to the bullpen. Franco would cap the scoring with a RBI double that scored Cerda as the Jaspers were unable to further dent the deficit.

The Golden Griffins would add a run in the eighth to provide the final 10-4 score.

Franco went 3-for-5 with a double, run and RBI while Cerda, Cimillo and Riera each notched two hits to pace a 12-hit attack.

Freshman RHP Carson Coon (Meriden, CT / Orville H. Platt) was solid in relief, striking out four while yielding a single unearned run over 4.0 innings.

Stephen Bennett, William Krull and Jacob Victor combined to go 9-for-15 with a home run, two doubles, eight RBI and five runs to lead the Golden Griffins on offense.

RHP Andrew Sipowicz earned the win, yielding four runs on eight hits with a strikeout over 5.0 innings, while LHP Kyle Warner struck out four over 4.0 scoreless frames in registering the save.

The teams will conclude their series tomorrow with a 12:00 pm doubleheader.
