Riverdale, NY - Monmouth used a game-ending 10-2 run to defeat Manhattan 62-54 on Senior Night at Draddy Gymnasium.
Freshman
Warren Williams (Kingston, Jamaica / St. Benedict's Prep (NJ)) matched his career-high with 15 points while pulling down a personal-best eight rebounds to lead the way for the Jaspers.
Trailing 46-38 with 14:36 remaining, Manhattan was down but not out. Freshman
Elijah Buchanan (Bronx, NY / Woodstock Academy (CT)) split a pair from the line before converting a layup off a steal. Buchanan then grabbed the rebound on the ensuing possession and
Samir Stewart (Fort Lauderdale, FL / American Heritage) converted a layup on the other end, making it a one-possession game with 11:08 remaining.
Â
Mustapha Traore momentarily quelled the run with a free throw, before Stewart canned a triple to make it a one-point game.
Junior
Tyler Reynolds (Syracuse, NY / Harcum College) then converted a three-point play to give the Jaspers their first lead of the night at 49-47 with 8:52 remaining, while capping an 11-2 run.Â
Deion Hammond quickly scored five of the next six points before Williams converted on a layup to draw Manhattan even at 52-52 with 5:35 remaining.Â
Unfortunately, the visitors answered with a Mustapha Traore layup and would not trail the rest of the way.
Ray Salnave scored 18 points with nine rebounds and nine assists while Hammond added 17 points to pace Monmouth.
The Hawks improve to 11-20 and 10-8 in the MAAC while the Jaspers fall to 9-20 and 7-10 in the league.
