Manhattan Bests Saint Peter's on Senior Day

Riverdale, NY - Manhattan women's basketball secured a 62-46 win over Saint Peter's Sunday, February 24 to land at an even .500 in league play. It was the 10th win of the year for the Jaspers (10-17 overall), now 8-8 in the MAAC. 

Saint Peter's falls to 6-21 on the year and 1-15 in conference.

Highlights:
  • Junior Julie Hoier (Aabyhoej, Denmark / Marselisborg Gymnasium) earned her first double-double of the season, scoring 15 points and pulling down a career-high 12 rebounds. Hoier went 6-13 from the floor and 3-4 from the foul line. She earned eight defensive boards, while adding three assists, two blocks and a steal. 
  • Lynette Taitt (Irvington, NJ / Bishop Loughlin) added 13 for Manhattan, her ninth double-figure scoring game in the past 10 games. She added a career-high six steals in the game, as well as five assists. 
  • Courtney Warley (West Chester, PA / Bishop Shanahan) grabbed 11 boards for the Jaspers, adding eight points. 
  • Though the Peacocks managed to get within four of the Jaspers in the second half, Manhattan led the whole way, with 16 as the largest Saint Peter's deficit.
  • Manhattan forced 20 turnovers from Saint Peter's and nabbed 14 steals, including eight in the second half. The Jaspers scored 17 points off turnovers in the game, compared to 10 for the Peacocks.
  • Manhattan held a 38-32 advantage in the paint, while scoring eight more second-chance points than Saint Peter's. Manhattan earned 13 offensive rebounds in the game. 
  • Both teams hit just one three in the contest, with Manhattan going 1-5 from behind the arc and Saint Peter's shooting 1-9 from three-point range. Elsewhere the Jaspers shot nearly 43 percent, hitting 27 field goals, the team's highest of the season.
  • The win marks Manhattan's third in a row. The Jaspers defeated second-place Rider 60-57 on February 17, followed by a W over Iona on Friday.
  • As of Sunday afternoon, five MAAC teams sit at 8-8 in the league, including Manhattan, Monmouth, Niagara, Canisius and Siena. Quinnipiac has clinched the top seed in the league's tournament in March, while Marist and Rider duke it out for the second and third seeds. Saint Peter's and Iona will be ranked either 10th or 11th, while Fairfield currently sits at 7-10. 
  • Manhattan celebrated three seniors prior to Sunday's contest: graduate transfer Candela Abejon (Gijon, Spain / USC) and managers Gabriela Gamarra and Sally Santiago.
