Late Burst Lifts Monmouth Over Jaspers

West Long Branch, NJ - Monmouth scored 25 fourth-quarter points to overtake Manhattan in a 71-63 victory for the Hawks at the OceanFirst Bank Center.

Tied with Monmouth in the league going into the night, the Jaspers fall to 7-16 on the year and 5-7 in MAAC play. Monmouth improves to 10-13 overall and 6-6 in conference.

Highlights:
  • Freshman D'yona Davis (Bronx, NY / Truman) tied her career-scoring high with 20 points, including 13 first-half points. She added six rebounds, tying another personal best, and three steals in 25 minutes of play. Davis is averaging a team-high 10 points against MAAC opponents this season.
  • Lynette Taitt (Irvington, NJ / Bishop Loughlin) added 14 points for the Jaspers, her sixth consecutive double-figure scoring game. She shot 50 percent from the floor and picked up five boards and four assists.
  • Courtney Warley (West Chester, PA / Bishop Shanahan) and Juile Hoier (Aabyhoej, Denmark / Marselisborg Gymnasium) combined for 15 of Manhattan's 33 rebounds. Warley pulled down eight, including six on the offensive end, while Hoier added seven. Both players put in seven points apiece.
  • Manhattan held a 17-13 lead after the first 10 minutes of play, with Davis contributing 10 first-quarter points.
  • Monmouth erased the Jaspers' lead quickly in the second, tying the game at 19-19 within the first minute of the quarter. The Hawks' Sierra Green had the team's first eight points of the period, finishing with 13 of Monmouth's 21. Manhattan trailed 34-30 at the half.
  • The Jaspers went on a 7-2 run to open the third quarter, regaining the lead at 37-36 less than three minutes into the half. Taitt added three points to the run.
  • The Hawks would get within three of Manhattan with less than two minutes to play in the quarter, before Davis put together a five-point run that had the Jaspers up eight (54-46) with 10 minutes to play.
  • Davis opened the fourth with a steal and was fouled hard driving to the basket. She would not return to the game. Manhattan's Sini Makela (Helsinki, Finland / Mäkelänrinne Sports High) subbed in for the subsequent free throws, going 1-2 and giving the Jaspers a nine-point lead. It would be their largest of the game.
  • Monmouth would score the next eight points, including six from Green, before Taitt stopped the run with a Manhattan jumper with 5:50 to play. Green tied it up 20 seconds later with a three of her own, before Hoier put Manhattan back on top with a layup in the paint.
  • The Hawks regained the lead for good on a three by Green at the 2:24 mark, putting Monmouth up 63-61. The Hawks then held the Jaspers scoreless over the next two minutes to seal the win.
  • Green finished with 28 for Monmouth, aided by 15 from Lucy Thomas, who also pulled down eight rebounds.
  • Manhattan forced 21 turnovers from the Hawks, compared to 15 committed by the Jaspers. But Manhattan allowed the Hawks a 22-14 advantage in the paint, as well as 11 threes for the game.
  • Monmouth, the league's lowest-percentage free throw shooting team at 57.8 percent, went 14-15 from the foul line in the game.
