Seawolves Outlast Jaspers On The Road

Stony Brook, NY - Manhattan women's basketball held a 10-point lead on Stony Brook in the second quarter Friday night, but the Jaspers were unable to stave off a Seawolves comeback, losing 59-54 in Island Federal Credit Union Arena. 

Manhattan opens the season 0-1, while Stony Brook earns its second win of the year. 

Highlights:
  • Sophomore guard Sydney Watkins (Wanaque, NJ / Saddle River Day) earned a team-high 12 points against the Seawolves, shooting 80 percent from the floor and a perfect 3-3 from beyond the arc. 
  • Lynette Taitt (Bronx, NY / Bishop Loughlin) tied her career-high for rebounds, securing a team-high eight for the night. She added eight points to the Jasper offense and snagged three steals of the defensive end.
  • Reigning MAAC Defensive Player of the Year Courtney Warley (West Chester, PA / Bishop Shanahan) continued to prove a threat on D Friday, earning a team-high four steals. She added six points and four rebounds.
  • Manhattan shot 46 percent as a team in the first half, going 11-24 overall and 5-10 from three. On the opposite end, the Jaspers held Stony Brook to 26.3 percent in the first quarter, and although the Seawolves improved to 7-15 in the second, Manhattan took a 30-27 lead into the locker room at halftime. 
  • The third quarter proved the difference-maker for the Jaspers, who hit just six field goals on 17 attempts in the quarter while Stony Brook shot 50 percent in the stanza, catching up, and then surpassing Manhattan to take a 45-43 lead into the final period.
  • After falling behind by eight with 2:16 left in the game, the Jaspers cut the lead to five when Watkins drilled a three from the leftside of the top of the key at 1:09. 
  • Down five with 31 seconds to go, Pamela Miceus (Haverstraw, NY / North Rockland) secured a rebound on a missed Stony Brook three to give Manhattan the ball. But a failed attempt by Taitt on the offensive end with 14 seconds left sealed the victory for the Seawolves. 
  • Manhattan held the lead for 25:08 with just three lead changes in the contest. 
  • The Jaspers scored 26 points off turnovers, but gave up 24 to Stony Brook on the other end. 
  • Stony Brook dominated the paint, earning a 45-27 rebounding advantage over Manhattan, including 22 offensive boards. The Seawolves scored 34 points in the paint, compared to the Jaspers 26.
  • Stony Brook's Anastasia Warren earned a game-high 13 points, while teammates Cheyenne Clark and Kaela Hilaire each contributed 10.

Manhattan plays its home opener against Duquesne on Sunday, November 10 at 2:00 pm in Draddy Gymnasium. Prior to the game, Manhattan Athletics will retire the number of former Jasper great Sheila Tighe, starting at 1:30 pm.
