Birmingham, AL - Manhattan trimmed a 15-point second half deficit to six late in the game, but could get no closer in dropping a 70-57 decision to Samford.
The Bulldogs improve to 3-3 while the Jaspers fall to 2-1.
Sophomore
Tykei Greene (Queens, NY / Long Island Lutheran) paced Manhattan with 13 points and eight rebounds while classmate
Christian Hinckson (Queens, NY / Tilton School (NH)) added 12 points with eight caroms.
Samford was led by Josh Sharkey, who finished with a game-high 17 points and eight assists.
Trailing 53-38 with 9:58 remaining, the Jaspers rattled off eight-straight points to make it a seven-point game with 6:34 remaining following an
Elijah Buchanan (Bronx, NY / Woodstock Academy (CT)) layup.
Unfortunately, the Bulldogs would answer on the subsequent possession and pushed the lead back out to 13 when Manhattan made one final valiant push with seven-straight points in just 1:20. Buchahan hit a jumper off a
Nehemiah Mack (Jr., Harrisburg, PA / Massanutten Academy (VA)) feed, before Greene pulled down the rebound on the ensuing end and canned a triple off a Buchahan kickout. After Greene corralled another errant shot, Buchahan found
Warren Williams (So., Kingston, Jamaica / St. Benedict's Prep (NJ)) for an easy flush to trim Samford advantage to just 61-55 with just 2:24 to play.
After holding firm on the first 29 seconds of the next possession, the Jaspers came up with a steal before the shot clock hit zero, but were whistled for a traveling call to give possession back to the Bulldogs, as the visitors would get no closer the rest of the way.
