Riverdale, NY - Tyrese Williams' tiebreaking three pointer with less than two minutes remaining helped lift Quinnipiac to a narrow 63-59 win over Manhattan in the MAAC opener for each team.
Despite the defeat, freshman
Tykei Greene (Queens, NY / Long Island Lutheran) posted career-highs with 13 points and seven rebounds while senior
Thomas Capuano (Hastings-on-Hudson, NY / Iona Prep) added a season-high 13 points to lead the way for a Jasper team that shot a robust 44.4 percent (24-of-54).
Defensively, Manhattan also registered a 35-26 edge on the glass and a 34-12 advantage in the paint.
Quinnipiac, which led by seven points on two occasions, could not shake a pesky Jasper unit that made things interesting with a late second-half spurt.
The Bobcats led 55-49 with 6:13 to play following a Jacob Rigoni triple before coaxing a turnover on the ensuing possession. However, when trying to clear the ball, Capuano sprinted to halfcourt to grab the loose ball before calling timeout on the ensuing scrum.
Greene then converted a nifty layup before Capuano hit a jumper with the shot clock expiring to make it a one-possession game.
After Williams briefly answered with a free throw for Quinnipiac, sophomore
Ebube Ebube (San Juan, Puerto Rico / Lawrenceville Academy (NJ)) grabbed an offensive rebound and kicked it out for a
Nehemiah Mack (So., Harrisburg, PA / Massanutten Prep (VA)) three pointer to tie it up at 56-56.
Unfortunately, Manhattan was unable to break the deadlock on its next two possessions and the visitors closed the game out with a 7-3 spurt.
The Jaspers fall to 2-11 while the Bobcats improve to 6-6.
