Manhattan Falls To Iona In First MAAC Contest

Riverdale, NY - Senior Kenza Hall (Oakland, CA / Middle Tennessee State) tallied a match-high four blocks Saturday, tying a season-best, but her defense at the net wasn't enough to help the Jaspers topple Iona in Manhattan's first conference match of the season. The Jaspers fall to 0-12 overall this year (0-1 MAAC), while Iona improves to 3-4 (1-0 MAAC).

Highlights:
  • The Gaels swept the match three games to zero, going 25-11, 27-25, and 25-13.
  • Freshman Julia Menocal (Bronx, NY / Preston) earned a team-high five kills for Manhattan, matching a season (and career) high. She last nabbed five kills against Lehigh on September 1. Senior Olyvia Chaltas (Temecula, CA / Great Oak) also posted five kills against the Gaels.
  • Senior libero Alyssa Rehrer (Lorton, VA / South County) broke the 1,200-dig mark Saturday, finishing the match with 1,205 for her career. She is just 32 digs away from tying Allison Lind (1993-1996) at seventh on Manhattan's all-time digs list with 1,237. Rehrer ranks fifth in the MAAC with 4.13 digs per set.
  • Though she only had one block on Saturday, sophomore Erin Hoener (St. Louis, MO / Incarnate Word), the team's blocking leader at 26 for the year, is just four away from the 100-career blocks milestone.
  • Manhattan took Iona to a 27-25 second set, the first time this season the Jaspers have competed in a set tie-breaker. Down 22-10, senior Jade Jeffrey (Tamarac, FL / Cardinal Gibbons) and Chaltas earned two crucial kills to tie the set up at 22 all. Two points later, Menocal gave the Jaspers the 24-23 lead on a kill assisted by classmate Shruti Mangipudi (San Ramon, CA / Dougherty Valley), then tied the set again at 25-25. But the Jaspers committed both a service and attack error, giving the Gaels two unearned points to end the set.
  • Iona's Claire Archibald, currently the league's point leader, finished with a match-best 17 points on 12 kills, four service aces and two blocks. Teammate Emma Rose, the MAAC's assist leader, finished with 35 assists, two aces and six digs.
Up Next:
Manhattan will host Saint Peter's (2-12, 0-1 MAAC) Wednesday, September 19, in Draddy, starting at 7:00 PM.
