Riverdale, NY - Manhattan softball let up just four hits and three runs over the course of two games against Canisius on Sunday, April 22, but the Jaspers were unable to come out of the day with a win, falling to the Golden Griffins twice in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) doubleheader at Gaelic Park.
With the losses, Manhattan drops to 17-23 on the year and 2-10 in the MAAC. Canisius improves to 9-26 and 5-3 in the league.
Game one pitcher
Briana Matazinsky (Valley Falls, NY / Tamarac), who recorded the second no-hitter in program history against Niagara on Saturday, gave up just one hit in seven innings pitched against Canisius, a homer by Brittany Sockwell that proved to be the difference maker in the 1-0 win for the Golden Griffs. Matazinskly walked just three and struck out seven. She is now 7-9 on the season.
In game two, pitcher
Nicole Williams (Ansonia, CT / St. Joseph's) went six innings, striking out seven and walking just one. Now 5-9 on the season, she gave up two runs on three hits to Canisius, both home runs, on the way to the Griffs 2-0 win.
On a day that was quiet offensively for the Jaspers, senior
Shannon Puthe (Mullica Hill, NJ / Saint Joseph's) and sophomore
Christine Gebhardt (Middletown, NJ / Middletown North) both went 2-4 for Manhattan. Catcher
Daniela Chiorazzi (Stony Point, NY / North Rockland) went 2-6, while compiling 14 put outs in the two games.
