Riverdale, NY - Despite five goals from junior
Parker Giarratana (Delray, FL / Boca Raton Community), Manhattan dropped a 12-8 decision to Monmouth in the MAAC opener for each team at Gaelic Park.
The Hawks improve to 3-4 while the Jaspers fall to 3-5.
Monmouth struck first with a Griffin Figel goal at the 12:19 mark of the opening period only to be quickly matched by freshman
Jake Nicolosi (West Islip, NY / West Islip) just over two minutes later.
The defending MAAC Champion Hawks followed with four-straight scores in opening up a 5-1 advantage with 9:10 to play in the second quarter.
Following a timeout, sophomore
Brandon Grinnell (Wakefield, MA / Wakefield Memorial) stopped the bleeding with an unassisted score at the 7:45 mark before Giarratana found the back of the net on three-straight possessions in tying up the game at 5-5 with 3:27 to play until halftime.
During the spurt, junior
Joseph Bressingham (Glen Cove, NY / Nassau CC) won all four draw controls as the Jaspers converted on four-straight possessions.
Monmouth would quell the spurt when Bryce Wasserman broke the tie with a goal just over a minute later. However, the lead would be short-lilve before Grinnell delivered the equalizer just before halftime in making it a 6-6 score.
In the third period, Manhattan appeared poised to break through and take its first lead only to be denied by a stout Monmouth defense. Figel broke the tie before Wasserman scored three-straight in giving the Hawks a 10-6 lead with 9:54 to play.
The Jaspers would twice cut the deficit to three goals on Giarratana goals over the final nine-plus minutes but get no closer in falling 12-8.
