DeLand, FL - Manhattan softball went 1-1 Thursday, March 15 as the Jaspers continue to their spring break trip in Florida. Manhattan topped George Mason 7-4 in eight innings on Thursday afternoon, before dropping a game to Stetson 5-1 later that evening. Manhattan is now 8-8 on the season, with one more Florida game left before returning to Riverdale.
Freshman
Adriana Gambino (Stamford, CT / Westhill) went 3-4 for the Jaspers against George Mason (9-10), with a home run and two RBIs. Junior
Lauren Pitney (Ansonia, CT / St. Joseph's) went 2-4, including a solo homer, her third home run of the season, that gave the Jaspers a 2-0 lead in the top of the fifth. The Patriots grabbed a run in the bottom of the fifth, but Gambino answered with her homer in the top of the next inning to put Manhattan up 3-1.
After holding the Patriots to just one run in five innings, starting pitcher
Kayla McDermott (Garnerville, NY / North Rockland) was relieved by
Briana Matazinsky (Valley Falls, NY / Tamarac) with no outs and a runner on in the bottom of the sixth. Two outs later, with three on, George Mason freshman Meghan Graham tallied an RBI single to get the Patriots within one. Another hit and a walk drove in the tying run. With no change in the seventh, the Jaspers went into extra innings.
Freshman
Daniela Chiorazzi (Stony Point, NY / North Rockland) was hit by a pitch to start the eighth, putting her and Pitney (placed on second to start the extra inning) on base with no outs. The next batter, Matazinsky, placed a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners. Pitney then scored on a wild pitch, putting Manhattan up 7-3. Gambino singled up the middle next, scoring Chiorazzi. Senior
Victoria Ross punctuated the rally with a homer, scoring two more for the Jaspers. The Patriots were able to score one run on an error in the bottom of the inning, but couldn't match the Jasper explosion, giving Manhattan the first win of the day. Matazinsky would also earn the victory, making her 3-3 from the mound this season.
The tide turned in the second match-up against Stetson (20-9), who the Jaspers beat 9-2 this past weekend in the Stetson Invitational. Manhattan managed just three hits in 24 at bats on Thursday, losing to the Hatters 5-1. Matazinsky batted a double for the Jaspers, her sixth of the season. Pitcher
Stephanie Kristo (San Jose, CA / Archbishop Mitty) would take the loss, her first of the season.
