Emmitsburg, MD – Senior captains
Sarah Lang (Golden's Bridge, NY / Vermont) and
Kara Hodapp (Oak Ridge, NJ / Jefferson Township) each recorded a hat trick, but Mount St. Mary's broke an 8-8 with 2:52 left in the second half and overcame the Jaspers 12-8 on Saturday afternoon.
The Mountaineers improved to 1-0 on the season, while the Jaspers fall to 0-1.
Manhattan was first on the board just over four minutes into the contest. Hodapp, who was denied an attempt moments earlier, returned on a successful clear and launched a shot past Mountaineers goalkeeper Jillian Petito for the Jaspers' first goal of the year.
The road team extended its lead to 2-0 when junior
Jordyn DiCostanzo (Eastchester, NY / Eastchester) notched her first goal of the season just two minutes later. DiCostanzo is coming off a three-goal campaign in 2017.
The lead would not long, however, as Mount St. Mary's equalized the score off goals from Carly Miller and Kate Kinsella. The Mountaineers would rattle off three more unanswered goals for a 5-2 lead.
A four-goal edge turned to just one at halftime. Lang scored on a man-up opportunity, while junior
Molly Fitzpatrick (Yorktown, NY / Lakeland) registered the team's first free-position goal of the year. Finally, Hodapp tallied her second of the game with less than five minutes remaining in the opening stanza to make it a 6-5 deficit.
In the opening minutes of the second frame, Lang notched her second goal to knot the game at six. Lang almost gave Manhattan the lead less than a minute later, but her shot hit the post.
After the two teams traded goals to make it 7-7, the Mountaineers retook the lead on a free-position goal from Emily Davis with less than 11 minutes left in the contest.
As the clock lowered to under five and a half minutes, Mount St. Mary's committed a foul, leading to a free-position for Lang. The fifth-year senior ripped the ball past Petito to tie the game once again, this time at eight.
The Mountaineers called a timeout with 3:04 to play in regulation. Immediately after, Miller fed Taylor Carhart and she scored to make it 9-8. Mount St. Mary's would not relinquish the advantage and scored three more times while keeping Manhattan in check the rest of the way.
