Manhattan Drops Road Decision At UMBC

Box Score (PDF)

Baltimore, MD -
Freshman Elijah Buchanan (Bronx, NY / Woodstock Academy (CT)) scored 10 points and handed out three assists, but it wasn't enough as Manhattan dropped a 75-52 decision to UMBC.

The Retrievers improve to 2-1 while the Jaspers fall to 0-2 and will next square off with Coastal Carolina on Friday, November 16 at 4:30 pm.

K.J. Jackson led all players with 20 points as UMBC shot 49.1 percent (26-of-53) from the floor, including 44.8 percent (13-of-29) from distance.

With the Retrievers leading 37-18 at the 4:16 mark of the opening stanza, Manhattan ripped off a 12-1 run over the next 2:34 to make things interesting. Freshman Tykei Greene (Queens, NY / Long Island Lutheran) stole the ball before converting on the other end to start the spurt. Senior Thomas Capuano (Hastings-on-Hudson, NY / Iona Prep) then canned a pair of triples, sandwiched around a UMBC free throw, before sophomore Ebube Ebube (San Juan, Puerto Rico / Lawrenceville Academy (NJ)) drew a charge on the defensive end. Ebube would score on the ensuing possession and following a Retriever turnover, freshman Samir Stewart (Fort Lauderdale, FL / American Heritage) converted a layup in drawing the Jaspers to within eight at 38-30 with 25 seconds until halftime.

Unfortunately, UMBC would answer with a 15-2 run that bridged the end of the first and the beginning of the second half in jumping out to a 21-point advantage.

Manhattan would trim it to 15 but get no closer in dropping its first road contest of the year.

Notes
* Capuano scored nine points on the strength of three triples and is now 5-for-10 from long range on the year.

* Senior Samson Usilo (Brooklyn, NY / Nazareth (NY)) scored seven points with a team-high seven rebounds.

* The Jasper reserves outscored the starters by a 33-19 count

* Junior Tyler Reynolds (Syracuse, NY / Harcum College), Greene and freshman Daniel Schreier (Santa Monica, CA / Vermont Academy (VT)) all made their first collegiate starts.

* Reynolds and freshman Warren Williams (Kingston, Jamaica / St. Benedict's Prep (NJ)) each had six points.

* This was the first match-up between the teams.

Up Next
* Manhattan will partake in the KEMI Northern Kentucky Basketball Classic, starting Friday, November 16 when the Jaspers square off with Coastal Carolina at 4:30 pm.
