Riverdale, NY - The Jaspers held their opponent to less than 40 points for the second time this season as
Manhattan College (5-9, 2-1) earned its second Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) win Thursday morning in a 58-39 victory over Canisius (3-11,1-2) in Draddy Gymnasium.
Senior guard
Amani Tatum (Cambria Heights, NY / James Madison) led all scorers with 13 points, all scored in the second half of the game. Freshman
Lizahya Morgan (East Hartford, CT / Capital Preparatory Magnet), having earned a spot in the starting lineup since the December 21 match-up against Virginia, netted a career-high 10 points, seven of which came in the first quarter, allowing the Jaspers to post an early lead.
The Jaspers out-rebounded the Golden Griffins 44-30, including 32 defensive boards, on the way to the league victory. Freshman center
Courtney Warley (West Chester, PA / Bishop Shanahan) pulled down 11 rebounds, her best rebounding effort since she grabbed 12 at LIU Brooklyn on December 16. Manhattan is 3-0 this season when earning 40 or more rebounds, and 4-1 when out-rebounding their opponent. Warley finished the game with five blocks (a career high), in addition to her seven points and two assists.
Despite committing 20 turnovers in the contest, the Jaspers were able to take advantage of Canisius' poor shooting effort. The Griffs shot just 26.3 percent for the game, including a 13.3 percent second quarter where the team went 2-15 from the floor. The Jaspers outscored the Griffs in each quarter and are undefeated this season when allowing less than 50 points in a game. Senior guard Margret Halfdanardottir led Canisius with 12 points, but was held scoreless by Manhattan in the fourth quarter.
Senior guard
Taylor Williams (Windsor, CT / Capital Preparatory Magnet) was just shy of a double-double, with nine points and nine rebounds in the game.
