Buffalo, NY - Junior LHP Tom Cosgrove (Staten Island, NY / Farrell) struck out 10 in firing a two-hit shutout in leading Manhattan to a doubleheader split with Canisius.
The Jaspers won game two by a 2-0 count in moving to 15-32 and 9-11 in the MAAC. The Golden Griffins took game one by a 16-5 score and are now 30-19 and 13-7 in the league.Game Two Cosgrove was the story of game in notching his fourth multi-strikeout and complete game of the year. The Staten Island native struck out 10 while also inducing eight groundouts and picking a runner off of first while scattering just a double in the first inning and a single in the fifth.
Manhattan threatened in the first before breaking through with a run in the second. Senior Jason Patnick (Hopewell, NJ / Hopewell Valley) walked with one out before moving to second on Richie Barrella's' (So., Larchmont, NY / Canterbury Prep) infield single. Senior Jose Carrera (Miami, FL / St. Brendan) then plated Patnick when he chopped a single through the left side against a drawn-in infield.
After stranding a pair of runners in the third, the Jaspers added to the lead in the top of the fifth. Junior Brendan Bisset (New City, NY / Don Bosco Prep (NJ)) was plunked to lead off the frame before moving to third on a pair of pass balls. Sophomore Fabian Pena (Miami, FL / Calusa Prep) brought Bisset around with a run-scoring single through the left side in extending the lead out to 2-0.
In the bottom of the fifth, Brett Migliore singled with one out but was promptly picked off by Cosgrove, who then got the next batter looking to keep Canisius off the board.
The Golden Griffins would again threaten in their next trip to the plate, placing runners on first-and-second with one out. However, Cosgrove fanned the next two batters in stranding a pair on the bases.
Cosgrove then capped his first career complete game shutout by striking out the side in the seventh.
Pena went 2-for-3 with a RBI and a walk while junior Brandon Valls (Miami, FL / Dean CC) was 2-for-3 to pace a seven-hit Jasper attack.
Andrew Sipowicz was the tough-luck losing pitcher, yielding two runs with three strikeouts over 7.0 innings.
Game One
Canisius scored six runs in the first innings en route to posting a decisive 16-5 victory over Manhattan.
Pena went 2-for-4 with two doubles and three RBI to pace a seven-hit Jasper offensive effort while Bisset also was 2-for-4 with a double, walk and run.
Stekl went 4-for-6 with four runs, two RBI, three doubles and a triple to highlights the Canisius offense.
JP Stevenson struck out four over 5.0 innings in moving to 9-3 on the year.
The teams will conclude their series tomorrow with a single game at 12:00 pm.
