STONY BROOK, NY – Nicole Williams (Ansonia, CT) tossed her fourth shutout of the season on Sunday afternoon, as the Manhattan College softball team split a non-conference doubleheader at Stony Brook. After the Seawolves (14-27) took the first game at University Field by a 10-3 count, Williams allowed just five hits in the nightcap, an 8-0 Manhattan (29-17) victory.
Manhattan's offense gave Williams the only run she needed in the top of the first. Dominique Palagruto (Sewell, NJ) was hit by a pitch and Lauren Pitney (Ansonia, CT) drew a walk before Christine Gebhardt (Middletown, NJ) smacked an RBI single that put the Jaspers in front 1-0. Manhattan then doubled its advantage on Pitney's RBI single in the fifth.
It was still 2-0 in the seventh when the Jaspers erupted for six runs. Victoria Ross (Bloomfield, NJ) reached on an error to start the rally, then four consecutive singles by Shannon Puthe (Mullica Hill, NJ), Palagruto, Briana Matazinsky (Valley Falls, NY) and Pitney led to three runs. After a Jenn Vazquez (Fairfield, CT) sacrifice fly and an RBI single by Kat Prevo (San Diego, CA), Puthe drew a bases loaded walk in her second plate appearance of the inning to make it 8-0.
Williams (9-6), meanwhile, scattered five singles, and only one Stony Brook runner reached third base in the contest. She gave up a leadoff hit in the bottom of the seventh but retired the next three Seawolves in order to clinch Manhattan's 12th shutout win of the season. Williams struck out two and walked two in the victory.
Pitney led the way offensively, reaching base all four times she came up. She finished 2-for-2 with two walks, two RBIs and a run scored. Ross went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, while Puthe, Palagruto, Matazinsky and Prevo all scored a run and drove in another.
Lindsey Hughes (3-4) pitched 6.1 innings for Stony Brook and allowed five runs (four earned) on five hits with six strikeouts and five walks. Taylor Pechin yielded three runs (two earned) on four hits in 0.2 innings.

In game one, Stony Brook jumped in front early with six runs in the first and two in the second. The Jaspers got one back on Stephanie Reinhardt's (Albany, NY) RBI single in the fourth, then Palagruto made it 8-3 with a two-run single in the fifth. Maddie Colombo (Los Gatos, CA) followed with a single and Reinhardt reached on an error to load the bases with two out, but Ross struck out to end the threat. The Seawolves then picked up another run in the bottom half of the inning to go up 9-3.
Offensively, Pitney and Palagruto paced the Jaspers with two hits apiece. Palagruto also drove in a pair of runs, while Pitney scored once. Reinhardt finished 1-for-2 with an RBI, and Matazinsky went 1-for-2 with a run scored. Kayla McDermott (Garnerville, NY) (4-3) got the start in the circle and took the loss. She surrendered seven runs (six earned) on five hits, struck out one and walked four. Stephanie Kristo (San Jose, CA) allowed two unearned runs on six hits and a walk in 2.2 innings of relief.
