WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ – On Wednesday afternoon, the Manhattan College women's lacrosse team (5-10, 2-5 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) saw its two-game winning streak come to an end with a 9-7 loss to Monmouth (5-10, 3-3 MAAC) at Hesse Field. The contest was broadcast live on ESPN3.
Monmouth jumped out to an early 3-0 lead before Darby Nolan (Oak Ridge, NJ) connected at the 23:41 mark of the first half. However, the Hawks responded with two straight tallies to increase its advantage to 5-1. After goals by Emily Sandford (Floral Park, NY) and Molly Fitzpatrick (Yorktown, NY) brought the Jaspers within 5-3, Monmouth's Olivia Higson scored to put the Hawks up 6-3 at halftime.
A Fitzpatrick tally less than a minute into the second half once again trimmed Manhattan's deficit to two, but the Hawks responded 90 seconds later. The teams traded goals throughout the second half, as Jordyn DiCostanzo (Eastchester, NY) capped the scoring with 25 seconds left in Monmouth's 9-7 victory.
Fitzpatrick tallied a hat trick for the Jaspers, while DiCostanzo, Sandford and Sarah Lang (Golden's Bridge, NY) each finished with a goal and an assist. Molly Flores (Chevy Chase, MD) recorded three draw controls and Kara Hodapp (Oak Ridge, NJ) caused three Monmouth turnovers. Emma Kaishian (Yorktown, NY), meanwhile, picked up three ground balls, as Manhattan held a 17-15 edge in that category. In addition to collecting three ground balls, Nikki Prestiano (Yorktown Heights, NY) (5-10) made 12 saves in goal.
Caroline Corbliss registered two goals and an assist for the Hawks. Higson also found the back of the net twice, while Nicole Ceraso finished with a goal and two assists. Monica Cortes controlled three draws, and Megan Hart corralled three ground balls. Riley Brager (4-9) earned the win after recording 10 saves.
Manhattan concludes the regular season with a 3 p.m. visit to Fairfield (10-4, 6-0 MAAC) next Wednesday. The Jaspers need a victory over the Stags to remain in contention for a berth in the MAAC Tournament.
