Wappingers Falls, NY - Hofstra defeated Manhattan 8-2 in non-conference action at Dutchess Stadium.
The Pride improve to 9-25 while the Jaspers fall to 9-24.
Hofstra opened the scoring on David Leiderman's two-run double in the top of the first.
Manhattan threatened in the bottom part of the frame as junior Brendan Bisset (New City, NY / Don Bosco Prep (NJ)) smoked a one-out double to left field while extending his hitting streak to eight games. However he was left stranded as the Pride second baseman made a nice play for the final out of the frame while keeping the Jaspers off the scoreboard.
Hofstra added to the lead in the third thanks to Vito Friscia's sacrifice fly but the damage could have been worse had it not been for a diving catch by junior Adam Genners (Jacksonville, FL / Stanton College Prep) in center field.
The Pride extended their advantage on Brad Witkowski's two-run homer in the fifth inning before adding another run in the sixth in opening up a 6-0 lead.
In the bottom part of the frame, Bisset singled and sophomore Fabian Pena (Miami FL / Calusa Prep walked with one out but Manhattan was unable to put a run across in stranding the pair.
Hofstra added two more runs seventh before the Jaspers got on the board in the eighth. Pena hit a two-run double down the left field line in scoring Genners and senior Jose Carrera (Miami, FL / St. Brendan) but the damage could have been worse as Manhattan left the bases loaded.
Pena went 2-for-3 with two doubles and a walk while Bisset also notched a pair of hits and Carrera reached safely three times in leading the way for the Jaspers. Freshman RHP Alexis Calderon (Bethlehem, PA / Liberty) fired 1.1 scoreless frames while junior RHP Steve Arntsen (Manorville, NY / Easport-South Manor) fired a perfect frame to lead the way for the pitching unit.
Witkowski paced a nine-hit Pride offense, going 3-for-4 with a home run, three runs and two RBI. Chris Weiss earned the win, striking out two over 2.0 innings of one-hit ball.
Manhattan will next host LIU Brooklyn on Wednesday, April 19 with first pitch tabbed for 6:30 pm.
