Newark, DE - Freshman Brandon Grinnell (Wakefield, MA / Wakefield Memorial) scored twice to pace seven goal-scorers for Manhattan but it wasn't enough in a hard-fought 12-9 defeat to CAA-member Delaware.
With the win, the Blue Hens improve to 5-2 while the Jaspers fall to 2-4.
Delaware opened the match with three goals but the damage could have been worse as Michael Zingaro (Cortland Manor, NY / Walter Panas)made three early saves before Grinnell scored the first of his two goals with 1:26 to play in the opening period.
Freshman Luke Hanson (Middletown, NY / Minisink Valley) opened the second-quarter scoring with a fast-break goal off a Kelson Borisenko (Fr., Winnipeg, Manitoba / Hill Academy) pass before senior Alex Abiog (Saratoga, CA / Bellarmine College Prep) tied the game up at 3-3 at the 12:24 mark with a man-up goal off a feed from classmate Matt Garvey (Essex Falls, NJ / West Essex).
The Blue Hens responded with three-straight goals before Grinnell again found the back of the net with 47 seconds to play until halftime off a Conor Darby (Jr., Havermill, MA / Assumption) pass while trimming the deficit to 6-4 at the break.
After halftime, Delaware extended its lead back out to three before the teams alternated goals until the Blue Hens scored two in a row in stretching the advantage out to 12-8 with 3:52 to play.
Freshman CJ Scharf (West Islip, NY / West Islip) answered with a score to provide the final 12-9 score while adding a pair of assists.
Junior Joseph Bressingham (Glen Cove, NY / Nassau CC) won 14-of-25 face-offs and collected a team-high seven ground balls with Zingaro registering 16 saves.
Matt Olbrich scored three goals to pace Delaware.
The Jaspers return to action when they host UMass Lowell on Saturday, March 11 at 1:00 pm.
