EMMITSBURG, MD – The Manhattan College softball team capped the Mount St. Mary's Invitational with its fourth straight win on Sunday morning. Manhattan (11-9) scored six runs in the third inning to notch a 7-3 victory over Cornell (4-6) at Meadows Field.
Cornell took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, but the Jaspers got one back when Shannon Puthe (Mullica Hill, NJ) scored on Lauren Pitney's (Ansonia, CT) groundout. Puthe then sparked Manhattan's big third inning with a triple to left. After Alexa Dawid (Milford, CT) walked, Christine Gebhardt (Middletown, NJ) drove in both runners with a double to left center. Jenn Vazquez (Fairfield, CT) ripped an RBI double of her own before Stephanie Reinhardt (Albany, NY) knocked in a pair on her single to left. Reinhardt came across on an infield single by Victoria Ross (Bloomfield, NJ), making it 7-2.
Manhattan loaded the bases with one out in the fourth, but was unable to add to its lead. The Big Red, meanwhile, couldn't touch the Jaspers' pitching. After Cornell put a run across on Jessica Bigbie's RBI single in the top of the seventh, Danielle Gabriel (Island Heights, NJ) retired Rebecca Kubena on a fly ball to secure the 7-3 victory.
Puthe finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored, and Gebhardt and Reinhardt each recorded two RBIs. Briana Matazinsky (Valley Falls, NY) (6-3) made the start in the circle and earned the win. She allowed two runs on four hits, struck out three and walked two. Nicole Williams (Ansonia, CT) picked up a strikeout in two perfect innings, while Gabriel yielded one run on two hits and a walk in the seventh.
Bigbie and Tori Togashi each had two hits and a run scored or Cornell. Bigbie also tallied an RBI. Bridgette Rooney, meanwhile, went 1-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. Starting pitcher Katie Lew (1-3) gave up seven runs (six earned) on seven hits and walked two in three innings of work. Maddie Orcutt tossed the final three innings, surrendering one hit and three walks while striking out three and holding the Jaspers without a run.
On Wednesday, the Jaspers play their final doubleheader before the start of Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play. Manhattan visits Sacred Heart (7-12) for a 3 p.m. twinbill.
