EMMITSBURG, MD – After scoring 19 runs in its first two games of the Mount St. Mary's Invitational, the Manhattan College softball team tallied 13 more on Saturday. Victoria Ross (Bloomfield, NJ) finished a double shy of the cycle and Nicole Williams (Ansonia, CT) pitched a one-hit shutout, as the Jaspers (10-9) posted a dominant 13-0 victory over Morgan State (7-10) at Meadows Field.
Manhattan scored a run without the benefit of a hit in the top of the first and added three more in the third. The Jaspers then erupted for an eight-spot in the fourth. Ross and Shannon Puthe (Mullica Hill, NJ) started the inning with back-to-back triples, with Puthe also coming around to score on the play thanks to a Morgan State throwing error. After Alexa Dawid (Milford, CT) singled and Christine Gebhardt (Middletown, NJ) walked, Jenn Vazquez (Fairfield, CT) crushed a three-run homer to left that made it 9-0.
The Jaspers weren't done yet, though. Briana Matazinsky (Valley Falls, NY) reached on an infield single, moved to second on a wild pitch, and scored on Rachael Mumma's (Mechanicsburg, PA) base hit. That brought up Ross, and she went deep to left for her second extra base hit of the inning and her third home run in the tournament. Manhattan added another run in the fifth when pinch hitter Danielle Gabriel (Island Heights, NJ) recorded her first career hit and RBI with a single to left that scored Kat Prevo (San Diego, CA).
Williams, meanwhile, was dominant in the circle. Her no-hitter was broken up on a one-out single in the fourth, but the base runner was thrown out at second trying to extend it into a double. Morgan State's only other runner in the game came on a second-inning walk. Williams (2-2) faced one batter over the minimum and struck out five in the five-inning complete game.
Ross finished 3-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Vazquez knocked in four runs, while Dawid had two hits and scored twice. Puthe and Gebhardt each added two runs. Overall, the Jaspers collected 13 hits, and every starter either scored or drove in a run.
Audrianna Alvarez had the only Morgan State hit in the contest. The Bears used five pitchers, with starter Erica Hawkins (1-5) taking the loss after allowing a run on four walks and striking out one in an inning of work.
On Sunday, Manhattan concludes the Mount St. Mary's Invitational with a 9:30 tilt against Cornell (4-5). The Big Red won a pair of 3-2 contests over Canisius and Morgan State on Saturday.
