Saint Peter's Defeats Manhattan

Riverdale, NY - Saint Peter's defeated Manhattan 69-50 at Draddy Gymnasium despite 11 points from junior Calvin Crawford (Middletown, NY / St. Thomas More (CT)) and 10 points and six assists from classmate Zavier Turner's (Indianapolis, IN / Ball State).

The Peacocks improve to 14-12 and 10-6 in the MAAC while the Jaspers fall to 9-18 and 4-12 in the league.

With the score tied at 7-7 at the 15:30 mark of the first half following an Ak Ojo (Lagos, Nigeria / Cardinal Hayes (NY)) layup, Saint Peter's recorded a 10-2 run over the next four-plus minutes of action.

The advantage would grow to 23-13 at the 8:58 mark before Manhattan ripped off 10-2 run of its own thanks to contributions from junior Samson Usilo (Lagos, Nigeria / Nazareth (NY)), freshman Aaron Walker Jr. (Brooklyn, NY / Cardozo), junior Zane Waterman (Winston-Salem, NC / Fayetteville Academy) and Turner in making it a one-possession game at 25-23 with just over four minutes until halftime.

The Jaspers would ultimately trim the lead to one at the half  (30-29) thanks to a Waterman three pointer that just beat the shot clock with four tenths of a second on the game clock.

In the first half, Manhattan shot 42.3 percent (11-of-26), including 45.5 percent (5-of-11) from deep.

In the second half, the Peacocks scored 13-straight points coming out of the locker room in building a 43-29 lead with just over 14 minutes to play. Crawford and sophomore Thomas Capuano (Hastings-on-Hudson, NY / Iona Prep) quickly responded with three pointers to trim the deficit to eight only to see Saint Peter's answer with two quick buckets.

Unfortunately, the Jaspers would not get to within single digits the rest of the way as the visitors shot 59.3 percent (16-of-27) in the decisive second half.

Quadir Welton paced Saint Peter's with 19 points and 14 rebounds while Nick Griffin added 17.
