Riverdale, NY – Fairfield's goal in the 27th minute proved to be the difference as the Stags defeated Manhattan 1-0 Wednesday evening at Gaelic Park.
With the loss, the Jaspers fall to 7-7-0 overall and 4-3-0 in conference play, while Fairfield improves to 8-4-2 and 4-1-2 against MAAC foes.
The first 16 minutes of the contest were a fight for possession as both teams were quiet offensively. The first shot of the game came off the foot of junior
Ryan Shields (Standish, Wigan, England / Standish Community) in the 25th minute, but Stags netminder Gordon Botterill made the save.
Moments later, Fairfield had a throw-in from 20 yards out. Joseph Meyer tossed the ball into the 18-yard box, and Marcus Nordgard beat Manhattan keeper
Marcellin Gohier (Pouance, France) to give the Stags a 1-0 advantage.
Fairfield continued to apply pressure in the 43rd minute, but Gohier made the stop against Diego Casielles. Junior
Callum Carsley (Birmingham, England / Princethorpe College) answered with a shot of his own, but Botterill nabbed the shot.
Manhattan generated continuous offensive chances in the second half. In the 58th minute, freshman
Desmond Cole (Aurora, CO / Cherokee Trail) attempted a header 15 yards out that was blocked in front. He sailed another shot wide after collecting the rebound.
Ten minutes later, freshman
Brandon Joseph-Buadi (Shoreham-by-Sea, England / Woodard) dashed down the left sideline and crossed the ball to the right. Senior
Troy Carrington (Verona, NJ / Syracuse) jumped for the header, but could not make contact.
With nine minutes remaining, sophomore
Lorenzo Froehle (Anchorage, AK / Bartlett) headed a shot from close range, but Botterill denied his attempt.
