West Long Branch, NJ - Monmouth scored twice in the first half before holding off a late Manhattan rally en route to posting a 2-1 win in the MAAC opener for both teams on the Great Lawn.

With the victory, the Hawks improve to 2-4-2 while the Jaspers fall to 0-7-1.

Trailing 2-0 late in the second half, Manhattan was fouled in the box and junior Joe Hulme (Bolton, Lancashire, England / St. Joseph's Roman Catholic) put the penalty pick into the lower left corner in the 74th minute to trim the deficit to one.

Unfortunately, that would be as close as the Jaspers would get the rest of the way as Monmouth was able to keep the visitors at bay thanks to owning the bulk of the possession over the final five minutes.

In the opening stanza, Colin Stripling scored the first goal in the sixth minute off a deflection after sophomore Connor Hayes (El Dorado Hills, CA / Oak Ridge) stopped an early penalty kick. Stripling would add his second goal of the match in the 29th minute, firing a shot into the upper right post.

The Hawks owned advantages on shots (17-7) and corner kicks (5-4).

Hayes made a career-high six saves in defeat while Eric Klenofsky had one save in earning the win.

Manhattan returns to action when it hosts Canisius on Saturday, October 1 at 7:00 pm.
